ASCE Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders

In 2019, our ASCE Student Chapter President Eric Kastelic and Vice-President Scott Pressey had the opportunity to attend the ASCE Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders on January 15th and 16th in Chicago, Illinois. This workshop was held for ASCE student members, young members, and branch member chapters in regions 3, 6, and 7. Needless to say, this gave our students the opportunity to meet many other civil engineers and students from across the region and gave them a chance to learn about other groups' experiences and share their own as ASCE members.

At the workshop, there were many seminars throughout the day. Most topics were geared towards becoming a better leader, improving our ASCE chapter back home, and networking with professionals. One small focus session that our student went to was about recruiting members and how to gain interests in ASCE and civil engineering with the younger student at our schools. The small sessions allowed for groups to get together to pool ideas together and come up with innovative solutions to the issues our students face. During the larger seminars, experienced ASCE members would speak on certain topics and draw from their experiences to teach us about leadership and ways to improve our ASCE chapters.

WHAT TO DO?

Between seminars, there was plenty of time to network and meet new people. It was fun and interesting to hear the different experiences of other professions and student chapters from other states. These connections will not be short-lived either. Our students exchanged many contact information and hope to keep in touch with everyone that they met at the conference.

THANK YOU!

Michigan State’s ASCE Student Chapter would like to thank all of our sponsors and donors for this amazing opportunity. Without your support, our organization would not be able to experience these kinds of fun and incredible activates with ASCE.
